What is SHAKEN/STIR?
SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs) and STIR (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited) are protocols designed to combat caller ID spoofing by verifying the identity of the caller.
Key Parameters of SHAKEN/STIR:
- Attestation Levels:
- Full Attestation (A): The service provider knows the customer and their right to use the phone number.
- Partial Attestation (B): The service provider knows the customer but cannot verify the right to use the phone number.
- Gateway Attestation (C): The service provider can authenticate the call's source but cannot verify the customer or their right to use the number.
Call Authentication:
- Calls are signed with a digital certificate that includes the attestation level.
- The recipient's service provider verifies the certificate and attestation level to determine the call's legitimacy.
Benefits of SHAKEN/STIR:
- Reduces the incidence of fraudulent and malicious calls.
- Increases trust in caller ID information.
- Helps regulatory compliance with anti-spoofing laws.
Implementation:
- Service providers must implement SHAKEN/STIR protocols to comply with regulatory requirements and improve call authentication processes.
